CHIANG MAI PROVINCE

Chiang Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is among the highest mountains in the country. The city is on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.

In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and has been attracting over 5 million visitors each year, of which between 1.4 million and 2 million arebforeign tourists. Chiang Mai has also recently positioned itself to become a Creative City and is considering to apply for Creative City Status with UNESCO.

Chiang Mai's historic importance is derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trading routes. The city has long been a major center for handcrafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving.

03 Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (Thai: วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ) is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The temple is often referred to as "Doi Suthep" although this is actually the name of the mountain it is located on.

The temple is located 15 km from the city of Chiang Mai and is a sacred site to many Thai people. From the temple impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen and it remains a popular destination of foreign visitors.

04 Bhubing Palace

BHUBING PALACE

The Bhubing Palace is located on Doi Buak Ha, Muang District, Chiang Mai Province. It is the royal winter residence in Chiang Mai where the Royal family stays during seasonal visits to the people in the northern part of Thailand.

The palace is also the royal guesthouse for prominent state visitors from abroad. In the past Their Majesties welcomed or granted royal audience to State visitors only in the capital of Bangkok. Bhubing Palace was built in 1961.

The construction started initially with only the royal resident building and the guesthouse. The other buildings were additionally built on later dates.

05 Doi Pui

DOI PUI

Doi Pui - Hmong Tribal Village is located on Doi Suthep, a 1676 meter high mountain that is the focal point of Doi Suthep and Doi Pui National Park. The village is about 4 kilometers away from Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.

It still offers an insight into how Thailand's tribes live. The villagers wear traditional Hmong clothes, sell traditional Hmong handicrafts, and live in traditional Hmong-style homes.

06 Chiang Mai Zoo

CHIANG MAI ZOO

Chiang Mai Zoo is the first commercial zoo in Northern Thailand. The zoo was established on 16 June, 1977.

It is a privately operated zoo which includes a large variety of animals. In addition, it provides two large aquariums. which is the world's longest tunnel aquarium.

Overall, 400 animal species are represented in the zoo including three giant pandas, 18 species of penguins and elephants. One of the giant pandas was born here on May 29, 2009 and it is one of the few giant pandas born in captivity outside of China.

09 Snake Farm & Monkey School

SNAKE FARM & MONKEY SCHOOL

Mae Sa Snake Farm, is situated on the Mae Rim to Samoeng Road. This farm is the largest snake farm in the region. It attracts the maximum number of crowd as compared to all other Chiang Mai Parks & Gardens.

It has a large collection of snakes. Snake handlers show the general public all kinds of snakes in the farm. Some snakes are nonpoisonous but most snakes here are poisonous. The main highlight of the park is the poisonous Cobra.

Mae Rim Monkey School, located only 20 kilometers north of Chiang Mai, this is a nice place to see monkeys showing how clever they are. These lovable creatures perform in shows that last 45 minutes each-watch them ride a bicycle or even play basketball. There are two different kinds of macaques here, and they seem to be treated well by the staff.

10 Elephant Camp

Maesa Elephant Camp is home to one of the largest assembly of elephants in the north of Thailand. Our philosophy is to create a natural and healthy environment for the elephants while working to conserve and breed them,due to the dwindling number of Asian elephants left in the wild.

Mae Ta Marn Elephant Barn was located on Amphur Mae Tang. It has the area of 25 rai. It has been opening for tourists to visit and join the activities with kind Thai elephant since August 17, 1987 . On that day, we had 10 elephants but right now we have totally 60 elephants to serve both Thais and foreigners who come to watch the elephant performance, ride the elephant, experience the way of life of Thai Lee Saw hill tribe, have bamboo rafting, and take a short jungle trek.

12 San Kamphaeng

HOME INDUSTRIES @ SAN KAMPHAENG

San Kamphaeng District, The village is located 13 km. the east of Chiang Mai town in a district that is famous for silk and a cotton weaving. The silk and cotton souvenirs produced in this village are high quality. Factories and souvenir shops selling woodcarving, silverware, earth ware, lacquerware and cotton fabrics are located along the way from Chiang Mai fo San Kamphaeng.

Bo Sang, is also known as the Umbrella Village because of its many umbrella manufacturers. Almost the entire village consists of craft shops selling painted umbrellas, fans, bamboo and teak You'll also find the textured sa paper, made from mulberry tree bark.

13 Doi Inthanon

DOI INTHANON NATIONAL PARK

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is located in Mae Chaem District. The mountain was also known in the past as Doi Luang (meaning big mountain) or Doi Ang Ka, meaning the crow's pond top.

Near the mountain's base was a pond where many crows gathered. The name Doi Inthanon was given in honour of the king Inthawichayanon, one of the last kings of Chiang Mai, who was concerned about the forests in the north and tried to preserve them. He ordered that after his death his remains shall be placed at Doi Luang, which was then renamed.

14 San Kamphaeng Hot Spring

SAN KAMPHAENG HOT SPRING

Sankampaeng Hot Spring is an ideal destination for those interested in health and well-being. A natural spring emitting water with high sulphur content, the spring is said to cure ailments and rejuvenate the body. The water has a temperature in excess of 100 degrees centigrade and the area is so active that there is ongoing research into how to tap the springs as a potential energy resource. A trip to the springs is often combined with a trip to Sankampaeng Handicraft Village and Borsang Umbrella and Thai Handicraft Village.

Muay Thai kickboxing is Thailand's national Sport and is classed as one of the Martial Arts.Chiang Mai has several Muay Thai kickboxing camps and 2 Muay Thai kickboxing stadiums.

In Muay Thai kickboxing, the hands, elbows, knees and shins can be used. Muay Thai kickboxing is now becoming a popular sport throughout the rest of the World, and many would be fighters come to Thailand to learn the art.

The origin of Muay Thai is unclear but one theory is that the Tai people brought it to Thailand with them from China. Originally, the fighters fought bare fisted but today, the boxers wear gloves similar to those worn by conventional boxers.

16 Orchid Farm

With the great popularity of orchids many of Thailands wild species are becoming endangered and it is Orchid farms like these with their breeding programmes that will do much to help protect the species. Wild orchids differ distinctly from cultivared Orchids particularly in size, shape and colour Many of Thailand's species orchids have already become extinct due to both natural causes and human negligence so much of the hope for the future lies in the hands of these Orchid Farms.

At the Orchid & Butterfly farms you can also purchase butterfly and orchid jewellery designed with meticulous skill. If it's the Butterflies you want to see it's best to avoid the cold season between November - February.

17 Huay Kaew Waterfall

HUAY KAEW & WANG BUA BAN WATERFALL

The fact that it is free to visit makes it the best choice for waterfalls in Chiang Mai. Most of the other waterfalls are located in national parks, and there is an entry fee of 200 THB. The Huay Kaew and Wang Bua Ban Waterfall is popular with locals as it is close to the city, and it doesn't cost anything to enter. On a nice sunny day you can expect to see families or couples enjoying the piece and quiet and breathtaking views. Some people will sit and enjoy a few beers, relax and enjoy the scenery, others will hike up to the top of the fallsand enjoy the view overlooking the city.

18 Karen Long Neck Village

KAREN PRADUAN (LONG NECK) VILLAGE

The Karen Paduang are perhaps the most widely known of all the hill tribes in Thailand because of their long necked women. Some Thais refer to the Paduang as "I Kaw". The" | " showing contempt.

From a young age brass rings are put on the girl's necks as a beauty enhancement and continuously added to creating a long neck over time. After about 2 years of wearing these rings the girl's neck muscles become too weak to support their heads so they are unable to remove the rings.

The Paduang have lived in Thailand for a very long time and are not officially classed as Hill Tribe.

21 Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI PROVINCE

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand. In the north it borders Shan State of Myanmar and Bokeo of Laos.

The average elevation of the province is 580 m. The north of the province belongs to the so-called Golden Triangle, at which the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. The Mekong river forms the boundary with Laos, the Mae Sai and Ruak River to Myanmar. Through the town of Chiang Rai itself flows the Kok River.

The 1389m high ; Doi Tung (Flag hill) is the most important hill. The Wat Phra That Doi Tung temple on top of the hill according to the chronicles dates back to the year 911. Nearby is the Doi Tung royal villa, former residence of the Late Princess mother (mother of the present king) Somdej Phra Srinagarindra. Thanks to her activities the hills were reforested, and the hill tribes changed from growing poppy to other crops.

22 Wat Rong Khun

WAT RONG KHUN

Wat Rong Khun is a contemporary unconventional buddhist and Hindu temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand. It was designed by famous Thai artist ; Chalermchai Kositpipat. Construction began in 1997.

Wat Rong Khun is different from any other temple in Thailand, as its Ubosot (Assembly hall) is designed in white color with some use of white glass. The white color stands for Lord Buddha's purity; the white glass stands for Lord Buddha's wisdom that "Shines brightly all over the Earth and the Universe." The bridge leading to the temple represents the crossing over from the cycle of rebirth to the Abode of Buddha. The small semicircle before the bridge stands for the human world. The big circle with fangs is the mouth of Rahu, meaning impurities in the mind, a representation of hell or suffering.

23 Golden Triangle

GOLDEN TRIANGLE

The Golden Triangle is one of Asia's two main illicit opium-producing areas. It is an area of around 367,000 square miles (950,000 km2) that overlaps the mountains of four countries of Southeast Asia: Burma, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Along with Afghanistan in the Golden Crescent and Pakistan, it has been one of the most extensive opium-producing areas of Asia and of the world since the 1920s.

The Golden Triangle also designates the confluence of the Ruak River and the Mekong river, since the term has been appropriated by the Thai tourist industry to describe the nearby junction of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.

24 Doi Tung

DOI TUNG

Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, The Princess Mother, late mother of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, is affectionately known to the Thai people as "Somdej Ya" - The Royal Grandmother.

HRH The Princess Mother dedicated over 50 years of her life to public service, working tirelessly to improve the living standards and quality of life of impoverished families throughout Thailand, through healthcare, education, the improvement of living conditions, and the creation of jobs to help villagers become self-sufficient.

The development projects of Doi Tung and the soon to be opened Hall of Opium @ Golden Triangle Park initiated by HRH The Princess Mother are a legacy of her lifetime achievements and keep alive memories of HRH The Princess Mother and her contributions to a brighter future for many.

On the hill slopes just below The Royal Villa, beautifully landscaped gardens, featuring decorative and flowering plants, a Rock Garden, Water Garden, Palm Garden and an Ornamental Plant Garden, spread over 25 rai (nearly 4 hectares) of land present a mag nificent floral tapestry that speaks of the remarkable diversity of plant life.

25 Mae Hong Son

MAE HONG SON PROVINCE

Mae Hong Son (The City of Three Mists) is nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges, Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world. It is the most mountainous province in Thailand and composed of a total of 13, 814 square kilometers. It is virtually covered with mist throughout the year, the name refers to the fact that this terrain is highly suitable for the training of elephants. Former governors of Chiang Mai used to organize the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained before being sent to the capital for work.

Today, Mae Hong Son is a "dream destination" for visitors. Daily flights into its small airport bring growing numbers of tourists, attracted by the natural scenery, numerous hill-tribe communities and soft adventure opportunities.

26 Pai

PAI

Pai was once a quiet market village inhabited by Shan people (ethnic Tai whose culture is influenced by Burma; see the History section below), but nowadays Pai primarily thrives on tourism. Well-known among backpackers for its relaxed atmosphere, the town is full of cheap guesthouses, souvenir shops and restaurants. In the proximity of the town are spas and elephant camps.

Further outside of town, there are several waterfalls and a number of natural hot springs varying in temperature from 80 to 200 degrees Celsius. Some resorts tap the hot springs and feed hot water into private bungalows and public pools. As Pai lies at the foot of the mountains, many tourists use it as a base for trekking and visiting hill tribes like Karen, Hmong, Lisu and Lahu. Another notable attraction is the town's excellent Wednesday Market which brings large and colorful crowds of local villagers and tribal people from all around the Pai Valley.

27 Lamphun

LAMPHUN PROVINCE

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai : A principal landmark is the 46-metre tall golden Chedi whose present appearance was the result of the restoration work in 1443 by a king of Chiang Mai. Other architectural works include the ancient -style brick arch adorned with fine designs and the pair of sculptured lions at the door.

Wat Chamthewi or Wat Ku Kut : Built in the Lawo (Lopburi) style. The Chedi is a square structure similar to Buddhagaya in India. Ashes of the queen are enshrined within the Chedi.

Mae Ping National Park : Its main feature is the Ping River, which flows through the forests in the park. On both sides are fertile forest-lands with sheer cliffs providing beautiful natural scenery. Another attraction is the 7-level Namtok Ko Luang, which is fed from lime streams.

28 Lampang

LAMPANG PROVINCE

While Lampang is a major northern city well-served by road, rail, and air transportation, it has been spared from mass tourism which has altered the character of nearby cities such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Tourists typically stop by for lunch and visit the more famous attractions such as Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and the Thai Elephant Conservation Center and then proceed to points further north such as Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. Less well -known tourist attractions in Lampang are thus mostly visited by locals. Among these are the Wang Kaeo waterfall and the Chae Son National Park, a compact yet charming park which combine a natural hot springs with large waterfalls.

Many temples in downtown Lampang were built in the Burmese style, originally endowed by the logging tycoons of the late 19th century. Wat Si Bun Rueang, Wat Si Chum and Wat Pa Fang are among the extant examples. Nine of the 31 remaining Burmesestyle temples in Thailand are located in Lampang. Traditional Lanna architecture can be found at Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao, Other temples of some renown include Wat Phra That Chom Ping and Wat Lai Hin both in the Ko Kha district.

29 Lampang Ceramic

CERAMIC CENTER & HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES

Horse-drawn Carriages of Lampang : have been well-known for more than 90 years and Lampang is the only province in Thailand that still remains the horse-drawn carriages as a mean of transport within the city. It is an amazing experience to tour the ancient city of Lampang and witness the people's lifestyle and conserved architectures.

Ceramic Center : Lampang is a leading producer of pottery and ceramics. Hangchat is the main ceramic industry zone and it is here where you will find a number of ceramic plants. Goods produced include; dolls, pots, flower vases, cups and mugs. Other prominent industries in the province are the production of concreteand limestone mining.
